Studying abroad in India -- Indic Experiences ~~ Two Points of View

CNN PRODUCER NOTE: Please note that CNN cannot independently verify the events described in this post.

RoseChasm says she shared her account of studying abroad in India and experiencing repeated sexual harassment in hopes of spreading 'international exposure about what women travelers and residents experience in India.'

The South Asian Studies student says she is currently on a mental leave of absence from the University of Chicago, but expects to return to classes in the fall.

The University of Chicago issued the following statement: 'Nothing is more important to us at the University of Chicago than caring for the safety and well-being of our students, here in Chicago and wherever they go around the world in the course of their studies. The University offers extensive support and advice to students before, during and after their trips abroad, and we are constantly assessing and updating that preparation in light of events and our students' experiences. We also place extremely high value on the knowledge our students seek by traveling and studying other civilizations and cultures, and we are committed to ensuring they can do so in safety while enriching their intellectual lives.'

Dipesh Chakrabarty, a University of Chicago professor who was in India for the first three weeks of the session, told CNN that he was unaware of RoseChasm’s situation. He noted, though, that the university tries to prepare students for what they might encounter while abroad.

'Both faculty and staff in Chicago and our local Indian staff counsel students before and during the trip about precautions they need to take in a place like India,' Chakrabarty said in an e-mail. 'Ensuring student safety and well-being is the top priority of both the College and staff and faculty associated with the program.'

'Every year about 25 students enroll in it and several have gone on to become India-specialists by doing PhDs on the country and its past and present. This is the first time that I personally have come across such a serious problem,' he said. You can read more about this story on CNN.com.

    • India: A different view, By meeravijayan @ Cable News Network

    • CNN PRODUCER NOTE meeravijayan told me, 'I was inspired to respond because I am an Indian girl who has faced similar experiences that Michaela Cross describes on her ireport. Sexual harassment is common in India. And this can be frightening and traumatic for anyone who travels here. The air of hopelessness for women here is frustrating and I wish that things change. However, I know that although I have faced sexual harassment, there is a side to India that one can truly enjoy and appreciate. And given the heavy air of cynicism about the Indian mindset (which truly is deeply chauvinist), I wanted to point out, on a positive note, that one can also have a beautiful experience here.' - hhanks, CNN iReport producer

Remove the 'Canadian experience' employment barrier: OHRC -- Media Monitoring

    Today's update
The Ontario Human Rights Commission and
    the Learning Enrichment Foundation
Invite you to learn about the OHRC’s new
Policy on removing the “Canadian experience” barrier
    Date: Monday, July 29, 2013
    • Remove “Canadian experience” employment barrier: Ontario Human Rights Commission, The Canadian Progressive
The new policy sets out the OHRC’s position that a strict requirement for “Canadian experience” is discriminatory, and can only be used in rare circumstances. Employers and regulatory bodies need to ask about all of a job applicant’s previous work – where they got their experience does not matter. The policy also tells employers and regulatory bodies how to develop practices, policies and programs that do not result in discrimination.
“We welcome this new policy,” said Bill Thomas, Chief Executive Officer and Senior Partner, KPMG. “Businesses that invest in newcomers benefit from the skills and rich experience they have to offer and in return, become more competitive in today’s global economy.”

    • OHRC's Legitimate employment requirements:
    • A requirement for Canadian experience, even when implemented in good faith, can be a barrier in recruiting, selecting, hiring or accrediting, and may result in discrimination. Under the Human Rights Code, where discrimination is found, the organization or institution the claim is made against may establish a defence to the discrimination by showing that the policy, rule or requirement that resulted in unequal treatment is a legitimate standard, or a “bona fide” requirement. In the Meiorin[25] decision, the Supreme Court of Canada set out a three-part test to determine whether a standard that results in discrimination can be justified as a reasonable and bona fide one. The organization or institution must establish on a balance of probabilities that the standard, factor, requirement or rule:
      1. was adopted for a purpose or goal that is rationally connected to the function being performed
      2. was adopted in good faith, in the belief that it is needed to fulfill the purpose or goal, and
      3. is reasonably necessary to accomplish its purpose or goal, because it is impossible to accommodate the claimant without undue hardship.

Canadians granted entry free of charge ... arrival stamp issued upon arrival in the UAE

Canada Welcomes Return to U.A.E. No-Fee, On-Arrival Visas, Canada News Centre

May 28, 2013 – Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird today welcomed word that, effective June 1, 2013, Canadians will again be eligible for free visas upon arrival in the United Arab Emirates (U.A.E.).
“Sincere thanks to my counterpart His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the U.A.E., for delivering on his commitment to restore the previous visa regime for Canadians,” said Baird.
“It is great news for the tens of thousands of Canadians who travel to the U.A.E. each year for work or for vacation. It will help increase economic opportunity and long-term prosperity in both countries. It is also an important signal to the world that bilateral relations between our two countries are strong and getting stronger. We are on an upward trajectory. And that’s truly exciting.”
Canada and the U.A.E. will now focus their efforts on developing the Shared Strategic Agenda—announced on April 2, 2013, in Abu Dhabi. -- see also: UAE, Canada formally end visa row, News By AFP / Canadians still need visa to travel to the UAE / UAE visa-on-arrival for Canadians a right move, gulfnews.com

    The Canadian Ebook: Market Trends

The Canadian Ebook Market Plateaus at 15%, Says New BookNet Canada Study
    Extract:
"The Canadian market for ebooks remains steady, according to a new report from BookNet Canada. Findings in The Canadian Book Consumer 2012: Annual Report show that paperback books (including mass markets) comprised 58% of all purchases in 2012. Hardcover made up 24% and ebooks 15%...
...The report has also revealed that Canadians still prefer to buy their books in physical stores. 34% of book purchases were made in non-book retailers, 37% in bookstores and 25% online—print book purchases made online account for 19% of those online sales. The top reasons respondents said they chose brick-and-mortar bookstores were the convenience of the location, the selection available and ease of purchase. Non-book retailers, such as Costco and Walmart, were used for those same reasons, but pricing and the convenience of being able to shop for other items were cited more often...."
